‘Egyptians for Healthcare Services (EHCS)’ signed an agreement with ‘Johnson Controls Arabia’ at Badr University in Cairo. Under the agreement, ‘Johnson Controls Arabia’ will provide the largest smart medical city in the Middle East — ‘CAPITAL MED’ — with cutting-edge integrated solutions for building automation and management, contributing to its role in revolutionizing the healthcare sector in the Middle East.

EHCS has launched the mega-project ‘CAPITAL MED’ as the first and largest smart healthcare city in the Middle East, with an area of 137.32 acres (577 thousand square meters). Moreover, the green medical city is set to comply with the environmental requirements set forth by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency of the Egyptian Ministry of Environment. Offering an extensive array of integrated and exceptional healthcare services and facilities, ‘CAPITAL MED’ is set to include more than 4,000 beds, 700 intensive care units, and 70 operating rooms upon completion.

‘CAPITAL MED’, as the first healthcare city in Egypt to be owned and operated by the private sector, will additionally include 19 specialized, integrated healthcare centers, two hotels, and a shopping mall. Initially, it will launch its first phase in 2023. This phase will include a multi-specialty university hospital with 532 beds, an outpatient complex that includes 168 clinics and 30 dialysis units, an advanced simulation center for education and training, a virtual hospital, a command-and-control center, and a central services station.

In accordance with the terms of the agreement, ‘Johnson Controls Arabia’ will be powering ‘CAPITAL MED’ with its world-leading smart building automation system, Metasys. The intelligent technology system will integrate the mega project’s commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, security, and protection systems on a single platform. Through the platform, all systems can communicate to deliver the information necessary to make decisions that boost building efficiency while enhancing the comfort, safety, and productivity of occupants.

Following the signing, Eng. Ibrahim Salem, Regional Director for Egypt, Lebanon, and Yemen at Johnson Controls Arabia, expressed his eagerness to launch the partnership: “We are thrilled and honored to be chosen by ‘Egyptians for Healthcare Services’ for the landmark project, ‘CAPITAL MED’. Powered by our smart building automation system, Metasys, we are confident that our services will play a crucial role in ensuring the safest and most efficient operations within the smart city. Most importantly, it aligns with our vision to revolutionize building management in Egypt to meet the increasing demand for sustainability and efficiency in the region.”

On his part, Dr. Hassan El Kalla, Chairman and Managing Director of ‘EHCS’, elaborated on the vision driving ‘CAPITAL MED’: “The idea of establishing an integrated healthcare city has been the dream of healthcare professionals in Egypt. It will push us to develop healthcare delivery systems, methods, and technology while also contributing to economic development by increasing the role of the private sector in the healthcare industry, and ‘EHCS’ has translated this dream and these ideas into an unprecedented project that serves both local and regional needs.”

Dr. El Kalla added that ‘CAPITAL MED’, which will be implemented by ‘EHCS’, is in Badr City on the Cairo-Suez Road, opposite the New Administrative Capital. Furthermore, its location is also considered near New Cairo and many new urban communities, and hence it will serve more than five million people living in a radius of 20 minutes, and more than 20 million within a 90-minute radius. He also confirmed that ‘EHCS’ aspires to a long-term partnership with ‘Johnson Controls Arabia’ to achieve a unique success story through this partnership.

‘Johnson Controls Arabia’ will also be responsible for implementing fire safety systems, public address systems (internal broadcasting) and voice alarm systems (PA/VA) in the first phase of ‘CAPITAL MED’. These systems will ensure safe and orderly evacuations of buildings in emergency situations.

It is worth noting that the ‘CAPITAL MED’ project is an unparalleled contribution to the development of Badr City and the New Administrative Capital, especially since the construction of the project will require an investment of approximately $1.2 billion and is expected to provide 15,000 job opportunities.
